I am Mahdi Kavyani Nejad, a psychologist, researcher, translator and photographer. I like to think of myself as a ‘curious observer of the human species’: someone who takes time to see and listen to people, and wants to better understand their thoughts, behaviour and experiences.
I was born in Isfahan in 1995. I spent my childhood and adolescence in Tehran before moving to Qom. Astronomy was one of my first serious interests. As a child, I wanted to understand the sky: I read books and magazines, observed with binoculars and later joined astronomy groups. This interest also led to my first work experience. For years, I taught astronomy to children and adults and accompanied them on observing trips.
Seminary studies and philosophy later became important parts of my life. I was particularly drawn to moral philosophy: how we can think about what is right and how to live, and what reasons we have for our choices. Reading philosophers from Plato to Descartes influenced how I approached questions and examined my own beliefs.
During those years, I also spent several years volunteering with working children and families facing difficult circumstances. I helped organise activities, took photographs and tutored some of the children. This experience made people’s everyday suffering more tangible to me and played an important part in my decision to study psychology. After studying independently and preparing to change fields, I entered the University of Tabriz and completed an M.A. in General Psychology.
Today, most of my time is devoted to psychology. Depression, a reduced ability to experience pleasure and anxiety are among the subjects I am interested in studying and researching. Neuroscience and evolution also give me ways to pursue questions about human beings. In clinical work, I place great importance on listening to and understanding the client’s experience, and continue learning through training and supervision.
Translation has a personal meaning for me too. Some important changes in how I think came through reading translated works. I would like to contribute to that work in subjects that matter to me. Co-translating Human Paleoneurology was one experience that brought together my interests in neuroscience, evolution and the human past.
Photography began as a hobby and gradually became professional work. For several years, I worked as a photojournalist for Hamshahri Qom and Shahr20, alongside portrait and commercial photography. Today, photography gives me space for self-expression: to show what I see and what I feel when encountering the world and other people. Portraiture remains one of my main interests, and I like to make time for conversation and getting to know someone before photographing them.
Literature has its own place in my life, especially the stories of Jorge Luis Borges. I first encountered his work through The Library of Babel while working in publishing. Later, I recorded readings of his stories for friends, which led to the El Laberinto podcast. Trying to understand his writing more deeply led me to study his life and ideas and prepare a lecture series about him.
On this website, I write about my studies, experiences and work, and share some of what comes from them. I hope it offers a chance to meet, talk and find people who connect with some of these questions and interests.
